Join us in a Prayer Vigil For Our Community
Today we are beginning a prayer vigil in anticipation of the grand jury’s decision in the Michael Brown case. Join us today and every day until Thanksgiving.
Prayer Before the Ferguson Grand Jury Decision on Michael Brown Shooting is Released
Beloved God of Justice and Mercy,
As our city and the nation prepares to receive news from the grand jury, we—your people—pray for your justice for all involved. We pray that the young people who have had their passions ignited will maintain their focus on you, Jesus, who chose to use words rather than weapons to speak to power, love rather than the sword to effect change.
God, your prophet Amos called out “for justice to flow down like waters and righteousness like an ever flowing stream” What that will look like, we do not know. But we do know that more loss, more violence, more looting, more arrests, more suffering of the innocents, more aggressive tactics coming from both sides will not bring your justice on earth.
And so we pray, asking you to send your Holy Spirit upon our city to evoke light and peace, love and reconciliation, justice and understanding. Bring about a new day and teach us how we should treat one another as part of the family of humanity.
(pause) Lord in your mercy…Hear our prayers.
Let us pray for the friends and the family who grieve the death of Michael Brown and others who have been wounded or killed.
(pause) Lord in your mercy…Hear our prayers.
Let us pray for those who gather publically in response to the news. For their protection and restraint we pray.
(pause) Lord in your mercy…Hear our prayers.
Let us pray for those whose job it is to protect the community and maintain peaceful order. For their protection and compassion, we pray.
(pause) Lord in your mercy…Hear our prayers.
Let us pray for Darren Wilson, the police officer involved in the shooting, and his family. May hearts be transformed.
(pause) Lord in your mercy…Hear our prayers.
Let us pray for our neighbors and friends of every spot and stripe. We are ALL your children. Help us to love and respect one another, and learn to hold our differences with honor.
(pause) Lord in your mercy…Hear our prayers.
The needs of our world, our nation, and our city and our lives are great and our abilities are limited. But we know that with your love, “all things are possible”.
This we pray in the name of Christ our Savior. Amen.
